WIREPERSON APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM

The Electrical Contracting Industry is fast expanding and becoming more complicated.  New methods, materials and equipment are constantly being introduced.  Also recognized is the need to comply with Title 12, Chapter 31, Administrative Rules, Department of Labor and Industrial Relations, the Hawaii State Plan for Equal Employment Opportunity in Apprenticeship Training.

In recognition of these facts and for the purpose of supplying an adequate number of skilled and properly trained crafts-persons, with equality of opportunity to the industry, the Wireperson Apprenticeship Program is prepared to train apprentices to become licensed journey-workers.

Minimum requirements for applicants for the apprenticeship program:

  • Must have completed the twelfth (12) grade of school or have successfully passed the GED Test;
  • Must have satisfactorily completed high school algebra I or higher (Pre-Algebra not acceptable);
  • Must pass the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) Aptitude Test with a minimum score established by the JATC;
  • Must be capably fit to perform the duties of the trade;
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen to work on U.S. Military Bases.

Helpful High School subjects:

  • Mathematics (Algebra I or higher)
  • Mechanical Drawing
  • Electricity and Electronics
  • Technical Science
  • Computer Logic

Terms of Apprenticeship

The Wireperson Apprenticeship Program consists of 10,000 hours (approximately 5 years) of on-the-job training supplemented by 800 hours of related classroom instruction.

Working Conditions

Electricians must frequently stand for prolonged periods and sometimes work in cramped quarters.  Electricians must be able to climb and work from ladders and scaffolds of various heights.  They must be able to crawl and work in confined spaces such as attics, manholes and crawl spaces.  Electricians must be able to read, hear and understand instructions and warnings.  They must know how to read a blueprint, measure, cut and assemble.  Electricians also do a lot of lifting, bending, squatting, lay-outs, testing of electrical systems, install and repair and work on high-rise decks laying conduit wires.

Recruitment Process

Upon the need of apprentices, open recruitment is held for approximately two weeks.  Advertisements are published in various daily newspapers in the state.  One must meet the minimum requirements and pass the NJATC Aptitude Test and interview process in order to be placed on the eligibility listing.  This  eligibility listing is kept for a period of two years.  It is from this list that applicants are selected to be indentured as an apprentice, should the need for more apprentices arise.
